Finding a Relationship with God

The most important relationship a person can have is with God.
You can have a relationship with God by following these four truths:

  1. Recognize that God loves you and wants you to have fellowship with Him.

God created us in His own image. He made us that we might honor Him and enjoy Him forever. We are important to God.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
    John 3:16

Jesus Christ said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
    John 10:10

  1. Recognize that your sins separate you from God's fellowship.

We chose to disobey God and go our own willful way. We still make this choice today. This leads to separation from God.

"You sins have cut you off from God."
    Isaiah 59:2

"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...For the wages of sin is death (spiritual separation from God)."
    Romans 3:23, 6:23

Individuals have tried many ways to solve this problem of separation, including trusting in religion, rituals, good works, and morality. But our efforts to find God and bridge this separation are without success.

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death."
    Proverbs 14:12

  1. Recognize that Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins is the way to fellowship between you and God.

Jesus Christ is the only answer to this problem of separation. He died to pay the penalty for our sins. He bridges the gap between God and people.

"God is on one side and all the people on the other side, and Christ Jesus...is between them to bring them together, by giving His life for all mankind."
    I Timothy 2:5-6

"Christ died for sins once for all to bring you to God."
    I Peter 3:18

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me."
    John 14:6

  1. Receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and thus enter into fellowship with God as His child.

We must trust Jesus Christ and receive Him by personal invitation.

Jesus says, "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will go in and eat with him and he with Me."
    Revelation 3:20

If we continue to trust in our own efforts to find God's acceptance, we will remain separated from Him forever. By trusting Christ, we receive forgiveness of our sin. We are related to God forever.

"To all who received Him (Jesus Christ), to those who believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God."
    John 1:12

"But when the time came for the kindness and love of God our Savior to appear, then He saved us - not because we were good enough to be saved, but because of His kindness and pity - by washing away our sins and giving us the new joy of the indwelling Holy Spirit (God's Spirit) whom He poured out upon us...and now we can share in the wealth of the eternal life He gives us."
    Titus 3:4-7

Is there any good reason why you cannot receive Jesus Christ right now?

How to receive Christ:

  1. Admit your need (I am a sinner).
  2. Be willing to turn from your sins (repent).
  3. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave.
  4. Through prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and direct your life through the Holy Spirit. (Receive Him as Lord and Savior.)

A prayer you may say to God to receive Christ into your life:

Dear Lord Jesus,

I know that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died for my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I now invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as Lord and Savior.

In Jesus' name. Amen.
