LESSON 4

LIVING AND SERVING GOD IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God given to empower us to live the Christian life (Gal. 5:25). In this study, we are going to look at the nature and work of the Holy Spirit and how He wants to empower us to live for and serve our Lord Jesus Christ.

A. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

In Acts 5:3-4, by lying to the Holy Spirit, Ananias and Sapphira were lying to ..................... .

1. The scriptural terms "...................... of ........................" (1 Cor. 3:16) and "....................... of the .........................." (2 Cor. 3:18) reveal that He is God.

2. The Holy Spirit is not just an impersonal influence, power or force. He is a Divine Person. We know this because the scriptures reveal He has a .......................... (Rom. 8:27), a ........................... (1 Cor. 12:11) and ............................ (Rom. 15:30), and has been ......................... ........................... (Isa. 63:10), ............................ (Eph. 4:30), .............................. (Acts 5:3, 4) and ................................ (Matt. 12:31) by men.

B. WHAT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT'S NATURE?

The nature of the Holy Spirit can best be summed up in Galatians 5: 22.23. The "fruit of the Holy Spirit" is the very nature of the Holy Spirit produced in our lives by His outworking.

The fruit of the Holy Spirit is:

..................................... ...................................... ....................................

..................................... ...................................... ....................................

..................................... ...................................... ....................................

(Note: It is called "fruit" not "fruits" because the Holy Spirit is all of these wonderful attributes). In the Christian life, our response to the Holy Spirit is essential because He will not violate our wills (read John 1:12; Rev. 3:20; Eph. 1:13).

C. HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT WORK IN OUR LIVES?

The Holy Spirit works in two ways in our lives. The first part of our Christian experience is known as 'regeneration' or being 'born again' (Titus 3:5; John 3:3). This is the work of the Holy Spirit "IN" our lives. All who experience this are known as Christians. In short, it could be called 'the power to live for Christ'.

The second part is known as the 'baptism of the Holy Spirit' (Matt. 3:11). This is the work of the Holy Spirit "UPON" our lives. All who experience this must be Christians. In short, it could be called 'the power to minister the life I am living for Christ'.

The first part of this wonderful work has been covered in the first few lessons of this course; we will now look at the second part.

D. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

1. In Acts 1:8, we find two reasons for receiving the Holy Spirit:

(a) "But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive........................(ability), and

(b) will tell ............................................................................"

2. The Bible says that Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 1:18, 20). His whole life was guided by the Spirit of God. What did the Spirit of God do at His baptism (Luke 3:21, 22)?

........................................................................................................................................................

3. Immediately after Jesus was baptized and anointed by the Spirit of God, He "full of the Holy Spirit left the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit to go out into the wilderness" (Luke 4:1). In Luke 4:14 and Acts 10:38, there is a FIVE letter work which tells what Jesus received from the Holy Spirit. Please write down this word. ...... ...... ...... ...... ......

E. IS THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR TODAY?

Every person who has been greatly used of God down through the centuries has been endowed with power from on high. Such men as Finney, Brainerd, Moody and many others worked along as best they could until one day they were led to see there was such an experience as the baptism with the Holy Spirit. The moment they received the Holy spirit in all His fulness there came into their service a new power that utterly transformed its character.

R.A. Torrey said, "It si quite possible to have something, yes much of the Holy Spirit's presence and work in the heart and yet come short of that special fulness and work known in the Bible as the baptism or filling with the Holy Spirit".

Dr. Billy Graham says, "I wonder if one of the secrets of Pentecostalism cannot be learned by our main stream churches with the great emphasis upon the Holy Spirit. The time has come to give the Holy Spirit His rightful place. WE NEED TO LEARN WHAT IT MEANS TO BE BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, we need to accept, to get something, for we do not have the same dynamite that the early church had".

1. Peter explained the coming of the Holy Spirit upon them as the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy (Acts 2:16). What two things did Peter say the people must do in order to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit ( Acts 2:28).

(a) ........................................... (b) ...........................................

2. In the next verse we are told who the promise of Joel was meant for. Please complete the verse: "This promise (of Joel) is to .......................... (present generation), and to .....................

.............................. (next generation), and even to ............................................... (future generations), all who have been called by the Lord our God". (Acts. 2:39)

3. What is the command given in Ephesians 5:18? ........................................................................

........................................................................................................................................................

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

It is important to notice that Jesus, who was born of the Spirit and lived a perfectly sanctified life in the spirit, still received the anointing of the same Spirit for His three years ministry. Jesus did no miracles and made no real impact on society until He had been "anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power" (Acts 10:38; Luke 4:14, 15). We too must be born of the Spirit, led of the Spirit and empowered by the Spirit for our ministry.

SHEET 2/LESSON 4

IS THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT A SEPARATE EXPERIENCE FROM CONVERSION?

A simple illustration of what the Holy Spirit does can be made with water. When you are saved it is like taking a drink of water. YOU RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT into your life. Being baptized in the Holy Spirit is like jumping into a swimming pool. You no longer hold the water, but the water now holds you. THE HOLY SPIRIT RECEIVED (controls) YOU.

Note this pattern in the Bible. Please put the letter matching the right answer beside the Scripture that describes the event listed.
a) Jesus was born of the Spirit

b) Jesus was baptized in the Jordan

c) Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit

(a) Paul (Saul) was saved on the road to Damascus

(b) Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit

(c) Paul was baptized in water

a) The people of Samaria were saved

b) The people of Samaria were baptized

c) The people of Samaria receive the Holy Spirit

a) There were some disciples in Ephesus

b) These disciples were baptized

c) These disciples received the Holy Spirit

G. HOW DO I RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OR FULNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a GIFT which must be received by FAITH just as you received salvation (Acts 2:38).

1. What are some of the steps to take in order to receive this gift of the Holy Spirit? (Only one or two words are need for each answer).

(a) Acts 2:38 .............................................................................................................................

(b) Acts 5:32 .............................................................................................................................

(c) John 7:37 ............................................................................................................................

(d) John 7:38, 39 ......................................................................................................................

(e) Luke 11:13 ..........................................................................................................................

2. What are some of the evidences of being filled with the Holy Spirit? (Please put in your own words).

(a) Acts 1:8 ...............................................................................................................................

(b) Acts 4:31 .............................................................................................................................

(c) John 16:14 ..........................................................................................................................

3. It is essential that we receive the initial filling or baptism of the Holy Spirit, but we should

realize that this experience is not the end of the road. It is only the stepping stone to a richer fuller life in the Spirit. The Christian walk in the Spirit involves daily cleansing from

sin, daily feeding on the Word, daily communion with our Lord, daily obedience to the

Spirit's prompting, and daily being filled with the Spirit.

Please complete the following verses which bring out these different aspects of the Spirit-

filled life:

(a) Daily cleansing "Wash me clean from my guilt. .................................................................

................................................................................................................................. (Psalm 51:2)

(b) Daily feeding "Study this book of the law continually. .....................................................

.................................. and .............................., so you may be sure to obey all that is written in

it. Only then will you ............................ . (Joshua 1:8).

(c) Daily communion "Those that ......................................................... and I in them, will produce .................. fruit. For apart from me you can do ..........................." (John 15:5).

(d) Daily obedience "... the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those that .............................

(Acts 5:32).

(e) Daily filling "Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the

Holy Spirit.................................................................(continuously)" (Eph. 5:18).

H. WHAT IS THE GIFT OF TONGUES?

This is an experience which happened to all who were baptized in the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4). We see from the scriptures that:

1. Speaking in tongues is not the baptism of the Holy Spirit but being ........................................

........................... (Luke 24:49) is. Speaking in tongues is a gift that must be received and operated by faith as a result of being baptized in the Holy Spirit.

2. 1 Cor. 14 tells us that a Christian speaking in tongues:

(a) speaks to ....................... (vs. 2) (b) ..................................................... (vs.4)

(c) ........................................ (vs. 14) (d) ..........................................with the Spirit (vs. 16)

(e) gives ...........................................(vs. 16)

and according to Acts 2:11, speaking in tongues is telling of ....................................................

........................................................................................................................................................

God fills the soul that it may pour

The fulness of another heart

Not that the filled with good may store

The good God giveth to impart
